As an athlete, or someone who is coaching athletes, you have a unique viewpoint of your sport and can profit from it online! Here's a list of reasons why you need to bring your knowledge to the internet today:

1. You need more money. You may have a job you love, and even make decent money. You may hate your job and get paid peanuts. Either way, a web business can help! You will be able to make a decent side income to supplement what you have, or even make a career out of your online business.

2. You need more time. Having an online business means you can create passive income, and free up the amount of time you have to spend working.

3. You can give back to the world. Creating a site around a concept that you are aware of or that you already teach others means bringing those ideas to the world. If you are an expert in a certain sport why keep everything to yourself? If you are a coach, why not teach to a massive audience instead of a small, local one?

4. You are an individual and don't like bosses. Who likes to have a boss, even one that you get along with? A web business can eventually free you from this seemingly inevitable human condition, of having to answer to someone besides yourself.

5. You want a flexible schedule. Maybe you love your coaching job and always want to do it, but it doesn't pay the bills. Maybe you just want to leave the 8-5 world and create your own hours. Either way, a web business is a great way to great freedom daily, and not be a slave to a schedule.

You've got plenty of reasons. Now it's time to take the first step in starting your sports business online!

No matter what site you build it will never be able to make money unless it gets traffic. You ask anyone online who is either new or intermediate what their biggest challenge is. The majority would say that getting traffic to their site is their number one priority.

So when building a site you will naturally want to build it in a way that will help this to happen. In order to do this you need to research extensively what way you will be able to get in front of people searching for products or information relative to your sites theme. You will need to research markets somewhat relative to your interests. For example you may be interested in travel.

Some guru's say you should not necessarily build a site around something you are interested in - instead you should build a site around a subject that will make you money. While this is understandable many people would be challenged to keep up the motivation doing something they do not like when they are starting out - because at this point there will be very little if any money coming in.

What you can do is pick a subject of general interest and then find niches within that which are profitable. This way you have the best of both worlds helping you to stay motivated and make money at the same time.

So your primary goal is to build a site that can compete with others and make you money. Develop the site in a way that the search engines will be able to understand and your visitors will enjoy. This is a theory that I have been studying for the past year and through observation believe that this can be applied to all situations that require a more efficient, functional solution. This paradigm has many names, but is best know as Occam's Razor. His razor suggests that when resources are limited or when speed of function is essential, design / complexity trade-offs should be based on what does the least harm to the probability of success, however that is defined.

Form is Function

There is a school of thought that beauty in design results in good function, but I prefer to subscribe the fact that just concentration on the functionality will by its very nature, create its own aura of design. Sometimes, the focus on functional efficiency inspires a feeling that goes beyond aesthetics and ultimately give us the sense that its form is of a higher echelon.

Barrier To Entry

The brain is an amazing piece of kit. One of its most amazing functions is its ability to optimise when processing data. Each brain has been trained over many years (or maybe it inherently has the ability) to simplify individual objects into groups. Instead of seeing each individual blade of grass, the mind sees a field. Millions of pieces of data grouped into one object because it knows, to comprehend millions of pieces of grass would take and enormous amount of effect. Effect that could be focused elsewhere. So it generalises to make life easier. This sort of information overload can happen in design as well; Too much will distract from your likely objective. Remember that 7 Second Rule? If your web app or website has 7 seconds to impress then wouldn't you prefer showing off your functional muscles? How useful your app is? and not long it takes to load the really cool (bandwidth crunching) design? Remember how it easy it is to make your mind up about someone when you them for the first time. Same rules apply.

Just Do It!

What are your objectives and goals? Hopefully, when developing a web app or website, to make your (or your users) life easier! And let's remember, this 'thing' we call the Internet is broken. So don't break any further with dodgy CSS and bloated javascript. Functional Turn Around is the most impressive aspect for me these days. Spend time developing how the app works, refine it, refine it again, then again. Then when it works, design around the edges. If you like Latin phrase then try this one:
